who became fluent in a foreign language as an adult: does that language register instantly, like your first language would?
To be honest, it never really feels exactly like your native tongue, at least not for me. I’ve been working on my second language for years and while I’m pretty much fluent now, there’s always that tiny split-second lag where my brain has to choose the word. It’s not like my first language where the words just fly out without me even thinking about the structure or the grammar.
When you're tired or stressed, that’s when you really notice the difference. My native language flows on autopilot, but in my second language, I sometimes trip over idioms or end up translating stuff in my head before saying it. It’s definitely improved a lot over time, but the "instant" connection you have as a kid just isn't quite the same when you pick it up later in life.
Don't get me wrong, it gets way easier, and eventually, you stop translating and start "thinking" in it, but that deep, intuitive feeling is just different. It’s more like a skill I’ve honed rather than something that’s just baked into my personality. You can get to a point where you're comfortable and quick, but that subconscious ease of a first language? That's a different beast entirely.
