The Secret Service basically has two massive, separate jobs that run at the same time, which is what makes them unique.
First and the one everyone knows about is Protection. This is the highly visible part where they are responsible for safeguarding the President, the Vice President, their immediate families, former Presidents, major presidential candidates, and visiting foreign heads of state. This includes everything from the agents you see right next to the President to the people doing advance work, surveying every hotel room and kitchen they might walk past, and the Uniformed Division guarding the White House grounds. They’re basically a full-time, high-stakes security force for all the top people in government, 24/7. It’s a massive logistical operation that goes way beyond just standing next to the President in sunglasses.
Second, and this is their original mission, is Investigation, primarily focusing on financial crimes against the United States. They were actually founded in 1865 to fight the huge problem of counterfeiting U.S. currency after the Civil War. That mission is still totally alive, but it’s expanded drastically to include modern threats. So now they also spend a ton of time fighting cybercrime, like massive network intrusions, identity theft, credit card fraud rings, and all sorts of electronic fraud schemes that mess with the country’s financial systems. It’s a really specialized type of law enforcement that requires a different skill set than the physical protection side of the job.
The two big jobs are Protective Operations and Investigative Operations.
The protection side is the famous stuff they are legally required to guard the President and VP. What most people don’t realize is how much this involves advance work: sending teams to every city and country the protectee will visit months ahead of time, checking every drain, every manhole cover, every person in every building along the motorcade route. It’s huge.
The investigative side is all about protecting the national economy. They were born to fight counterfeiting. Now, that’s expanded to include electronic fraud and cyber-crimes. They staff a lot of Electronic Crimes Task Forces across the country, where they partner with local police and state authorities to go after organized rings of identity thieves and fraudsters who are doing millions in damage. So they have to be experts in both bulletproof vests and network security.
The two core missions are officially Protection and Criminal Investigations.
For the protection mission, that includes the President, of course, but also securing big events that have national security implications, like the Presidential Inauguration, which they call National Special Security Events (NSSEs).
For the investigative mission, they’ve gone way beyond just chasing people who print fake $20s. Their focus today is hugely on cybercrime and electronic fraud because that’s where the big money crimes are happening now. They work hard to protect the nation’s financial infrastructure from being hacked or defrauded.
