India has a long and proud history of contributing to UN peacekeeping missions. One soldier, Captain Gurbachan Singh Salaria of the 3/1 Gorkha Rifles, was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest wartime gallantry award, for his actions during a UN peacekeeping mission in the Congo.
Captain Salaria was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra in 1961 for his bravery during a military operation in the Congo. He is the only person to receive the Param Vir Chakra while serving in a UN peacekeeping mission.
India has been a leading contributor to UN peacekeeping missions since their inception in 1948. More than 200,000 Indian troops have served in UN peacekeeping missions around the world. India has also suffered casualties in these missions, with over 170 soldiers losing their lives.
