Machu Picchu is located in the Cusco Region, Peru, high in the Andes mountains, overlooking the Urubamba Valley . It’s not directly accessible by car. The closest town isAguas Calientes, also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo, which is nestled at the foot of the mountain where the ancient Inca city is located.
The distance between Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu is only about 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles). However, due to the mountainous terrain, most visitors access Machu Picchu by bus (which takes about 30 minutes) or by hiking one of the several trails, which can take anywhere from 45 minutes to several hours depending on the chosen route.
