Space is actually not full of asteroids. Smaller debris, certainly. But not asteroids. Asteroids tend to be pretty localized to whatever areas they inhabit. Smaller debris, we run into often enough. Have you ever seen a shooting star? That’s a piece of debris that fell into our atmosphere and disintegrated into nothing. Also, keep in mind, not only are WE flying through space at hundreds of thousands of miles per hour, but so is everything else. Just like a highway, where vehicles are all moving between 55 and 65 miles per hour, but because they’re all moving together and in the same direction, collisions aren’t that frequent.
Like the other guy said, debris is usually small and out atmosphere protects us There are other planets that get bombarded with all kinds of asteroids and don’t have a strong atmpsphere to protect them, but if we lived on one of those planets complex life would not have been able to survive long enough to evolve over the course of billions of years. There is a reason we are the only planet in our solar system with obvious signs of life.
“Space is really, really, really big. Not only are there a lot of bits and bobs but there is even more….nothing. Like mostly nothing. And “often” in galactic terms is…not very often. Our atmosphere burns up a lot of crap, and some makes it through. A few have given us a a good smack in the past. “
” “Space is big. You just won’t believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it’s a long way down the road to the chemist’s, but that’s just peanuts to space.” Douglas Adams. Seriously though space is mostly empty. there is not much to run into. Most of the stuff we do run into just burns up without anyone noticing. Larger stuff causes shooting stars/falling stars that you may which upon. Occasionally really big debris hit us and they are big enough to actually make it all the way to the ground and caus craters. Very rarely a really big piece of space debris may hi the earth and maybe cause a really big crater and a mass extinction. (That hasn’t happened in 66 million years though). “
Well in a way we do. It’s said the earth’s surface is hit by an average of 17 meteorites a day. Meanwhile 25 million meteorites enter the earth’s atmosphere every day, most of those burn-up in the sky / atmosphere. http://abyss.uoregon.edu/~js/ast121/lectures/lec18.html
Even though the Earth is very wide, we travel through space horizontally with the narrow edge of the disc first, so we really do not take up much space. The Earth disc slides right through the asteroid fields mostly unscathed.

It’s very lonely out there.
Space is very vast
Asteroid fields are actually vast. Like each one is probably 100s of miles apart.
