  1. Honestly, you need to go for the old school actor trick: stay hydrated and then do the eye thing. Drink a decent amount of water beforehand, like an hour before. Then, right when you need to start, just keep your eyes open, stare straight ahead, and DO NOT BLINK. Seriously, fight the urge. After about 30 seconds your eyes will dry out and start producing tears automatically to compensate. Once they start to water, you can blink and the tear will roll out. It’s physical, not emotional, so it works reliably.

  2. Have you tried the yawn trick? It sounds totally ridiculous but it’s legit. If you can force yourself to do a big, wide yawn a couple of times, it stretches the tear ducts and can make your eyes water a little bit. It’s a subtle start, so you might need to combine it with the no-blinking thing, but it’s a good way to get that initial watery look without thinking of anything sad.

  3. If you’re really struggling to feel anything, sometimes you have to fake the physical signs of crying first. Tense up your jaw, make your lips tremble a little, and take those shaky breaths. Sometimes, if you trick your body into making the shape and sounds of crying, your emotions will actually catch up because your brain gets the signal. Like, your body thinks you’re crying, so it decides you must be sad and lets the real tears go. It’s backwards, but it gets the job done sometimes.

  4. You gotta find your “trigger thought.” Not just “sad things,” but one single, vivid memory that makes you feel that heavy ache in your chest. For me, it’s a specific moment from a movie, a scene where a character is completely alone. I don’t even think about the whole movie, just that one specific image and the feeling it gives me. That’s the fast track, because it bypasses the mental defenses and goes right for the gut feeling.

  5. Try listening to music that is guaranteed to make you feel melancholy. I have a whole playlist of super sad instrumental stuff, movie scores usually, and I just put my headphones on and let the music really sink in while thinking about the feeling of being heartbroken or really disappointed. The music gives your brain something concrete to attach the sad feelings to, which makes the tears flow way easier than just trying to think of something sad in silence.

  6. Depends on why you need to cry! If it’s for an acting thing and you need quick tears, sometimes I pinch myself hard on the skin between my thumb and pointer finger. It gives you a little jolt of pain that can make your eyes water instantly. You can do it with your hand down by your side so no one sees. It’s a cheap trick but it works if you just need the tears, not the big emotional breakdown.
