   As far as I know, the author is unknown. It was a secret history, like the title says, meant to be read only by the Mongol imperial family. It was written in the 13th century, pretty close to the time of Genghis Khan himself, so it’s a huge primary source for that time period. The original text disappeared from Mongolia, and the only copies we have were preserved in China as a textbook for learning the Mongolian language. It’s a really unique and interesting situation.
