  1. Yep, the downloads go bye-bye. It’s a key part of how they keep you paying for Premium, right? You don’t actually own the music, you’re just leasing the right to listen to it offline while you’re paying. The minute your subscription period is officially over, the Spotify app does a check-in and all those little download icons turn grey or disappear, and the storage space eventually clears up. Your playlists themselves are safe though, they just revert to being regular playlists you can stream on the free tier with ads and shuffle limitations.

  2. That downloaded music is tied to your premium status, so once the subscription runs out, you can’t play them offline anymore. Think of it like renting a movie; when the rental period is up, the movie still takes up space until you return it, but you can’t hit ‘play’. Spotify is sneaky about it, but that’s just how the streaming model works. You keep your playlists and liked songs list, which is the main thing, but the ability to listen offline is immediately gone.

  3. Yeah, you will lose the offline access to them. I cancelled my student plan over the summer because I wasn’t using it much, and the next day I tried to play a downloaded playlist on the bus and it hit me with the “Premium feature” message and wouldn’t play. It’s annoying, but it makes sense it’s the biggest perk of paying for the service. All your track lists will still be there in the app, but no offline playback.

  4.  Yes, you lose them. They’re not like actual MP3 files saved to your phone that you can play with any music app. They’re encrypted files linked to your active premium account. When the premium status drops, the encryption key essentially gets deactivated. It’s frustrating because it means you have to use up data to redownload everything if you decide to go premium again later, even though the files might be physically sitting there on your phone’s storage for a bit.

  5. Definitely lost. It’s a bummer, but that’s the whole point of their download feature only being for Premium users. If you could download and keep it after cancelling, nobody would stick around. They delete the ability to access those files so you don’t have a massive free music library. Your entire library of saved stuff will remain on your account though, just in the ad-supported, non-downloaded, sometimes-shuffle-only format.

  6. 100% yes, the downloads disappear/become unusable as soon as your Premium lapses. I went through this last year when my payment method expired and I didn’t notice right away. The app basically says “nope, no more offline listening for you” and you have to redownload everything if you renew. The data is still there on your device for a few days but you can’t play it, and then Spotify usually clears the cache eventually to free up space. You’re back to streaming with ads on the free tier.
