where does the water come from in a fire engine

A fire engine gets its water for fighting fires from two main sources:

1. Fire Hydrant: This is the most common source of water for fire engines in developed areas with a municipal water supply network. Fire hydrants are strategically placed underground with access points that firefighters can connect hoses to. When a fire hydrant is opened, pressurized water from the city’s water main flows through the hose to the fire engine’s pump. The pump then increases the water pressure to allow firefighters to use powerful streams of water to extinguish the flames.

2. Open Water Source: In rural areas or situations where a fire hydrant isn’t readily available, fire engines can draft water from an open water source like a lake, pond, swimming pool, or large river. The fire engine has a special hose called a suction hose or drafting line that is inserted into the water source. The engine’s pump then sucks the water from the open source and pressurizes it for firefighting purposes.
