   The elements in a row of the periodic table belong to the same period.

   Here’s why:

   The periodic table is organized in rows and columns.

   Each row (period) represents elements with the same number of electron shells. These electron shells are like energy levels surrounding the nucleus of an atom, where electrons reside.

   As you move across a row (left to right), the elements have one more proton in their nucleus and one more electron overall. This increase in protons defines the element’s atomic number.

   Having the same number of electron shells but increasing atomic number means elements in a period share some similar chemical properties, but these properties tend to gradually change as you move across the row.
