The only way to download music for free, legally, and listen to it offline without a subscription is to use platforms where artists have given explicit permission for free downloads. Forget Spotify Free, which only lets you listen online. Your go-to places should be Bandcamp (where many artists have a “name your price” option you can set to zero) and the Internet Archive, which has tons of legal, free audio files, especially for older or more obscure stuff. Once you have the MP3 file, just transfer it to your device and use a regular music player app like Poweramp or your phone’s default player.
My hack for this is to look for free releases on Bandcamp. You have to browse a bit, but there are tons of indie artists who let you download their music for free by entering $0 in the price box. It’s not all of Bandcamp, just certain releases, but it’s the best way to get high-quality, DRM-free MP3s that you can put on an old iPod, phone, or anything else and listen offline forever. Supporting artists this way is great too!
If you have a library card, seriously check if your local public library offers a service like Freegal Music or Hoopla. I was shocked to find out mine does! You can download a certain number of tracks per week, and they are legitimate, mainstream songs from major labels that you get to keep forever, legally. Then you just play them offline with whatever music player is on your phone. It’s a completely free and legal source for current and popular music.
I use Audiomack a lot for my free offline listening. It’s a mobile app where a ton of up-and-coming hip-hop and electronic artists upload their music, and they actually let you download a lot of tracks for free right inside the app to listen to without WiFi. It’s totally legal because the artists allow it. You won’t find major label stuff like Taylor Swift or anything, but for discovering new artists and genres, it’s honestly one of the best free options where the offline feature isn’t locked behind a “premium” tier.
Don’t overthink it check out the Free Music Archive. It was literally set up for this purpose: free, legal music for everyone. You go to their site, browse by genre, find a track you like, and there’s a download link for the MP3. You then move that file to your phone’s music folder and use any simple, local music player app. It’s the most direct and 100% legal way to build a completely offline library of files you actually own.
