“Nascar is a far better spectator sport. Relatively simple mechanicals, approachable and “down to earth” drivers, and everything is immediately viewable – you can see every single turn (on an oval track.) Rally is kind of boring as far as a spectator sport goes, cuz you see one car pass by every couple minutes, and you might hear about a crash a few hours later. F1 only recently has become more interesting thanks to KERS, DRS, and tires programmed to self destruct after a few laps. Also, F1 is pretty techy and pits are pretty much off limits unless you’re rich, unlike NASCAR where anyone can take a look. Also, crashes are more interesting than in F1 “
NASCAR has roots back to the prohibition days, and I think that appealed to the older generations, who then passed it down to the newer generations. A lot of NASCAR fans feel they can relate to the drivers, who seem like a guy down at the local bar instead of an Italian with a name they can’t pronounce, driving a foreign car.
It’s a redneck sport in the US, what do you want?
Because NASCAR is simple, much like most of its fanbase.
Rednecks love it.
Where I live there are amateur races, where guys build their own cars with money they save up from their regular jobs and race them. It seems like NASCAR is a professional extension of this, unlike F-1 which is out of reach to most regular people when it comes to participation.
because nascar started in the US and F1 started in Europe.
NASCAR started here and has a pretty interesting history. We haven’t had a course in F1 in quite some time (I’m excited to see it come back) and I’m not really sure why rally isn’t big here. NASCAR takes an absurd amount of skill though, don’t hate on it. They drive much, much closer together than F1 drivers, albeit slightly slower. Of the 3 we’re discussing, it’s my least favorite, but to say it takes no skill is absurd.
I have a new-found respect for nascar after playing gran turismo 5. Those are very heavy cars. I think the truth is that rally, f1, and nascar are all extremely difficult and require a tremendous amount of talent.
It’s a great spectators sport. Fans can see the entire race the whole time instead of seeing a car pass around a track every 3 minutes. Also there are many crashes and everybody loves crashes.
