  1. Not all players on a Stanley Cup-winning team get their name engraved on the trophy. Here’s who qualifies:

Games Played: A player must have played in at least 41 regular-season games with the championship team  or played in at least one game of the Stanley Cup Final.

Team Discretion: There’s some team discretion involved. The NHL approves the list submitted by the winning team, but they have rejected some requests in the past.

Limit on Names: Since 1998, there’s a limit of 52 names that can be engraved on the Stanley Cup, including both players and non-playing personnel.

    • if a player contributes significantly throughout the season but falls short of the 41 regular-season game mark or misses the finals due to injury, their name might not be included. The team ultimately decides who gets engraved within the NHL’s guidelines.
