Indeed, the consensus among historians is that Christopher Columbus introduced sugarcane to the New World on his second voyage in 1493, specifically to the island of Hispaniola (present-day Haiti and the Dominican Republic). While it wasn’t immediately a massive industry, this marked the very first cultivation efforts. The warm, humid climate proved ideal, and over the next few decades, cultivation expanded rapidly across the Caribbean islands such as Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Jamaica, eventually reaching massive scales in places like Brazil a bit later. Hispaniola really was the initial ground zero for New World sugar production.
