first past the post/winner-takes-all voting system. if the congress was representative of all voters instead of the 40% who managed to get a plurality, the country could sustain dozens of parties.

The system doesn’t want to change to accommodate a multi-party system, and the Republicans/Democrats sure as hell don’t want to lose any power.

First past the post natural creates 2 party system. A 3rd party draws voted away from the other party that they are most ideologically align.
