Iron is absorbed primarily in the duodenum and the proximal jejunum of the small intestine.
The duodenum is the first part of the small intestine, located right after the stomach. The proximal jejunum is the initial section of the jejunum, which follows the duodenum. These areas are favorable for iron absorption due to a couple of reasons:
Acidity: The duodenum has a lower pH (more acidic) environment compared to the rest of the small intestine. This acidity helps convert iron to a form that’s more readily absorbed by the body.Specialized Cells: The lining of the duodenum and proximal jejunum contain specialized cells that have proteins specifically designed to facilitate iron uptake.
