When you’re asking about a movie that is around seven hours long, the most famous one that immediately jumps to mind for serious film fanatics is Sátántangó (1994), directed by Béla Tarr. Its runtime is 7 hours and 19 minutes (439 minutes, to be exact). It’s a huge commitment, but it’s considered a masterpiece of “slow cinema.” The film is famous for its long, deliberate takes and its bleak, powerful story about the dissolution of a post-communist Hungarian farming collective. If you’re willing to spend a whole day dedicated to cinema, this is the definitive seven-hour movie experience, often shown in theaters with two long intermissions, and it’s absolutely one of the most significant long films out there
The real seven-hour champions are the films by Filipino director Lav Diaz. He is famous for his extremely long runtimes and “slow cinema” style. His movie Melancholia (2008) is a huge one right there at 7 hours and 30 minutes (450 minutes). He has several other films that are longer, like A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery which is over eight hours, but Melancholia is firmly in that 7-to-8-hour territory. If you’re into highly artistic, surreal, and meditative cinema that focuses on Filipino history and trauma, start looking into Lav Diaz’s filmography.
If you are counting things that are technically “movies” but are very experimental, there’s a seven-hour runtime associated with Ambiancé. The actual full film was supposed to be 720 hours long (a full 30 days!), but the Swedish artist Anders Weberg released a trailer for it that was 7 hours and 20 minutes long. Yeah, the trailer was over seven hours. That’s a fun trivia fact, even though it’s the trailer and not the feature, it definitely hit that seven-hour mark and is arguably more famous than the actual film that was never widely shown.
My longest watch in that general time frame was definitely Sátántangó at about 7 hours and 19 minutes. The only other major cinematic one I see listed right in that zone is the 2024 restoration of Napoléon (1927), which runs for 7 hours and 5 minutes (425 minutes). That’s Abel Gance’s silent film epic. Keep in mind, older films often have different cuts and restorations that affect the runtime, but the most complete version is a massive undertaking, right around seven hours.
It depends on what you consider a “movie.” If you mean the kind of feature film you’d see at a festival, the aforementioned Sátántangó and Lav Diaz’s Melancholia are the famous ones over 7 hours. There’s also Three Mirrors Creature’s Flashes of Flesh (2023) by Giuliano Tomassacci, which is listed at 7 hours and 22 minutes (442 minutes). It’s a very niche horror/fantasy film, but it definitely hits that specific duration.
For something really recognizable and popular that clocks in around that length, you have to mention the documentary O.J.: Made in America (2016). That one runs for 7 hours and 47 minutes, or 463 minutes. It was actually produced by ESPN and aired as a five-part miniseries, but it was also screened multiple times as a single, feature-length film to qualify for the Academy Awards (which it won for Best Documentary Feature). It’s an incredible, comprehensive look at O.J. Simpson’s life, set against the backdrop of racial tension in Los Angeles, and it’s a brilliant piece of investigative filmmaking that doesn’t feel like a tedious seven hours because the subject matter is so gripping.
