   A homologous series is a group of organic compounds that share several key characteristics:

   1. Same Functional Group: All the members of a homologous series contain the same functional group, which is a specific arrangement of atoms within the molecule responsible for its characteristic chemical behavior.

   2. Increasing Carbon Chain Length: Each compound in the series differs from the others by a CH2 (methylene) unit. In simpler terms, as you move down the homologous series, the carbon chain gets longer by one carbon atom with two attached hydrogen atoms for every additional carbon.

   3. Similar Chemical Properties: Due to the same functional group, members of a homologous series generally exhibit similar chemical properties. However, these properties tend to show a gradual change as the carbon chain length increases.

   4. Gradual Change in Physical Properties: While chemical properties are similar, physical properties like boiling point, melting point, and viscosity typically increase as the carbon chain gets longer. This is because the increasing size and mass of the molecule make it harder for the molecules to move past each other, leading to higher boiling and melting points and increased viscosity (resistance to flow).
