Varanasi and Madurai are both absolute heavyweights when it comes to Hindu pilgrimage sites. If you are writing this for a geography or religion project the answer they are looking for is Hinduism. These two cities represent the heart of the faith in their respective regions of India. Varanasi which is also called Benares or Kashi is way up north in Uttar Pradesh on the banks of the Ganges river. It is considered one of the oldest living cities in the world and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Pilgrims go there to bathe in the river because they believe it washes away their sins and many people actually want to pass away there because it is believed to lead to moksha which is basically liberation from the cycle of rebirth. On the other hand you have Madurai way down south in Tamil Nadu. It is famous for the massive Meenakshi Amman Temple which is dedicated to the goddess Meenakshi a form of Parvati and her consort Lord Shiva. The architecture there is incredible with those huge colorful towers called gopurams. Both cities are basically spiritual magnets that have been drawing in millions of people for centuries and they really show the diversity of how the same religion is practiced in different parts of the country through different languages and cultural traditions.
