In Chaucer’s “The Canterbury Tales,” the first tale isn’t told by one of the pilgrims we meet at the beginning.
The narrator, who is also a character named Geoffrey Chaucer (similar to the real-life author), proposes a storytelling competition among the pilgrims on their journey to Canterbury. However, the Knight is chosen as the first storyteller by drawing lots. So, the Knight has the honor of telling the very first tale in “The Canterbury Tales.”
