Church pastors, what is the most disturbing thing someone has confessed to you?
The germination of a pollen grain takes place on the stigma of a receptive flower, which is the female reproductive part. Here’s a breakdown of the process:
Landing: Pollen grains are transferred from the anther (male part of the flower) to the stigma through pollination by wind, insects, or other animals.
Hydration: The stigma has a sticky surface and secretions that help the pollen grain adhere. Once stuck, the pollen grain absorbs water from the stigma’s secretions.
Activation: This water absorption triggers germination within the pollen grain.
Pollen Tube Growth: An inner wall of the pollen grain (intine) pushes out through a germ pore on the outer pollen grain wall (exine) and forms a tube called the pollen tube. The cytoplasm of the pollen grain accumulates at the tip of the pollen tube, which is where growth occurs.
Growth Direction: The pollen tube grows down the style (the stalk-like structure that connects the stigma to the ovary) towards the ovule (female reproductive organ within the ovary) guided by chemical signals from the flower.
Delivery: The pollen tube carries the sperm cells from the pollen grain all the way down to the ovule, where fertilization can take place.
