The idea of separation of powers for the US government wasn’t entirely original with the Founding Fathers. They were heavily influenced by the writings of Enlightenment thinkers, particularly the French philosopher Montesquieu.
Montesquieu’s Influence: In his book “The Spirit of Laws,” Montesquieu argued for a separation of powers into three branches: legislative, executive, and judicial. He saw this as a way to prevent tyranny by ensuring no single group held all the power.
British Inspiration: The framers also drew inspiration from the British system of government, which had a separation of powers between the monarch, Parliament, and the courts.
The American Founding Fathers, however, built upon these existing ideas and created a unique system with checks and balances. This system allows each branch to limit the power of the others, further preventing any one branch from becoming too powerful.
