The first freeway in Los Angeles, and indeed in the United States, was the Arroyo Seco Parkway (now known as the Pasadena Freeway or Route 110). Construction on this freeway began in 1938, and it was opened to traffic in 1940. The Arroyo Seco Parkway connected downtown Los Angeles with Pasadena and was a significant milestone in the development of modern freeways in the United States.
