Spermatogenesis, the process of sperm production in males, begins around puberty, typically between the ages of 11 and 14. This initiation is triggered by a complex hormonal interplay between the brain and the testicles.
The Hormonal Cascade:
GnRH (Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone): The hypothalamus, a region deep within the brain, acts like a conductor by releasing GnRH. This hormone initiates the hormonal cascade.
FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone) and LH (Luteinizing Hormone): In response to GnRH’s signal, the pituitary gland located just below the hypothalamus releases FSH and LH.
Testosterone: Leydig cells in the testes are stimulated by LH to start producing testosterone, the key male sex hormone.
Testosterone’s Role:
Testosterone is essential for sperm production. It supports the development of sperm cells from immature germ cells by acting on the Sertoli cells within the seminiferous tubules of the testes.
Additionally, testosterone stimulates the development of male secondary sex characteristics such as facial and body hair, and a deeper voice.
