In Ripper Street, Edmund Reid’s daughter, Mathilda, goes through a dramatic ordeal:
Presumed Dead: At the beginning of the series, Mathilda is presumed dead after disappearing in a river accident (the SS Princess Alice disaster) during the Jack the Ripper case.
Alive But Hidden: A twist is revealed later. Mathilda actually survived the accident. However, Inspector Jedediah Shine (corrupt police officer) took her in and kept her hidden. After Shine’s death, Long Susan (a brothel owner) hides Mathilda again to protect her from further police scrutiny.
Brief Escape and Capture: When Sergeant Bennet Drake discovers Mathilda is alive, Susan tells Reid she died while being cared for. Mathilda, however, escapes and ends up with a teenage pimp named Harry Ward. Reid and Drake eventually find her, but she runs away again.
Uncertain Fate: The show’s ending leaves Mathilda’s fate unclear. She’s not seen reunited with her father.
