I was in high school in the UK about 10 years ago so maybe things have changed? But I think there needs to be less focus on exams and assignments. Teachers are literally training kids to pass exams and not much else, I feel like a focus on teaching in ways that students enjoy, and teaching topics that students enjoy (within reason) would make for a better school environment. I guess there was a system set up for kids who weren’t very academic, but it could definitely be improved. Also our sex ed classes were pretty basic and in this day and age I think it’s necessary to have something like that be pretty comprehensive. I was lucky enough to get sex ed in the first place but I never learnt about consent, LGBT+ issues or simply about how sex should be enjoyable which I think is really important.
I think it works for what it seems to be intended for. The first thing that needs to change is the one size fits all system that stifles creativity and critical thinking.
I don’t think it really works because everyone learns the same things. You can indeed choose other directions, but there are people who have very different talents that they don’t pay attention to at all at school. Also, I don’t think it’s good that (in my country at least) everyone is put together just by course. They don’t look at the level of learning or the other talents of the students at all. And a lot of children here are forced to do the highest direction and in the end they can’t do the job they want at all or they have missed a lot of teaching years.I want to say a lot more, but I think this post is becoming too long, so long story short: I want to see a lot of change, but I understand that not everything is possible.
