  1. In 2017, the Speaker of the House of Representatives was Paul Ryan. He’s a Republican from Wisconsin and held that position from October 2015 until January 2019.

Paul Ryan had a very buttoned-up, policy-driven persona he loved talking about budgets and entitlements, always with that clean-cut, Midwestern seriousness. While he projected this image of being the party’s wonk-in-chief, his leadership was often seen as more cautious than bold. He was praised for keeping the party relatively unified after the sudden resignation of John Boehner, but at the same time, he faced criticism for not standing firmly enough against the growing populist wave in his party especially during the early Trump years.

He supported major legislation like the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which Republicans celebrated as a win for economic growth, though critics pointed out that it disproportionately benefited the wealthy and ballooned the deficit.
