  1. Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a pyramid-shaped model that categorizes human needs into five distinct tiers, usually depicted with physiological needs at the base and progressing up to self-actualization needs at the top.

The needs lower down in the hierarchy must be satisfied at least to a minimum level before the individual can start to move on to the next level.

Here are Maslow’s basic human needs ranked in order from lowest to highest:

Physiological Needs(e.g., food, water, shelter, sleep, air) These are the biological needs that help us survive. When we are deprived of these needs, we may feel ill or even die.

    • Safety Needs(e.g., security, stability, protection from harm) These needs are for protection from physical and emotional harm. Once our physiological needs are met, we start to focus on our safety and security.

      • Love and Belonging Needs(e.g., love, intimacy, friendship, family, sense of connection) These needs are for social connection and belonging. We want to feel loved and accepted by others.

        • Esteem Needs(e.g., achievement, self-respect, confidence, independence, status, recognition) These needs are for self-esteem, achievement, and status. We want to feel competent and respected by ourselves and others.

          • Self-Actualization Needs(e.g., growth, achieving one’s full potential, self-fulfillment) These needs are the highest level in the hierarchy and are for realizing our full potential. We want to grow and become the best versions of ourselves.
