Yes downloading is still happening but how you download has become very important Now there are two types of downloading you shouldn’t mix them up The first is real file downloading meaning you get an MP3 or FLAC file that you can copy and move however you want You usually do this by paying on places like Bandcamp or iTunes The second is in app downloading meaning saving encrypted files on your device with a subscription like Spotify or Apple Music that you can only listen to within that app This is only for offline listening you can’t move the file elsewhere So music is still being downloaded but if you want to really own the file you usually have to buy it There are free and legal options too of course there’s tons of music shared by independent artists on places like Jamendo under Creative Commons licenses So don’t get confused downloading isn’t gone it just changed shape and legal methods became much more prominent
The downloading thing never really ended anyway It’s just that the old pirate sites got replaced by legal ones Actually there are two main ways The first is buying an album or song from places like Bandcamp or iTunes Store you directly get the file MP3 FLAC whatever you want That file becomes yours you can put it on any device you like The second is downloading for offline listening within apps like Spotify or Apple Music with paid subscriptions In this second option the song you download only works inside that app you can’t get a real file on your computer I like collecting files so Bandcamp and transferring my old CDs to the computer are still my favorites
Old folks are confused Does downloading even exist anymore Most people use Spotify Premium or YouTube Music There’s an offline listening option there you press the button and you can listen without internet as if you downloaded it Technically the file isn’t yours it just stays in the app but you get what you want I think this is the most practical way Who wants to chase down files one by one
I’m always trying to discover new music That’s why places like Bandcamp and Free Music Archive are perfect for me There are lots of independent artists there On Bandcamp sometimes you see a “name your price” option you can put zero and legally download some songs for free the file format is usually high quality too Or you can support with a very small amount and get the MP3 file directly On SoundCloud artists sometimes add a download link too don’t miss that either
I’m telling you don’t get into illegal stuff Old sites and video converters still exist but in most you either get poor sound quality or risk a virus The best thing is to buy at a reasonable price from platforms like Bandcamp where the artist earns directly Or check out places like Jamendo there’s tons of music distributed for free under Creative Commons licenses It’s legal high quality and gives you peace of mind
